The plot follows the exploits of seven children who are terrorized by an eponymous being who uses its victims' fears and phobias to disguise itself while hunting its prey. To attract its preferred prey of young children, "It" usually takes the form of a clown. The novel is told primarily in third-pe... rson omniscient mode, with narratives alternating between two time periods. It explores themes that would later become King staples, such as the power of memory, childhood trauma, and the ugliness hidden beneath a veneer of traditional small-town values.

Her hands twisted restlessly together like a pair of pink and hairless animals at play.

Reviews of It

Maybe it's finally time to revisit this old haunt, to reassure myself that It is still as sleek, scary and rambunctiously entertaining as I remember.

I found It more gruesome than scary. King catalogues pretty much every gory and disgusting aspect of the killings that he can, which makes for a gross-out read, but is It really frightening? The elusive nature of the beast actually makes it less threatening as the novel goes on (and on and on).

The book isn't without it's faults, but I still found it to be an immensely enjoyable read. You had great characters battling a memorable villain...While the book will take you a while to get through, it's worth the effort and this does still stand as one of my favorite books, not just by King, but in general.

It is the epitome of why Mr. King remains so wildly popular and should be read by everyone for its iconic images and phrases. Just be warned – it is gruesome and petrifying, but then again, would you expect anything else from Mr. King?
