In the dystopian world of Chicago, Beatrice Prior splits society into five factions, each dedicated to cultivating a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of each year, all 16-... year-olds must select the faction they will devote the rest of their lives to. The decision for Beatrice is between staying with her family and being who she truly is—she can't have both. So she makes a choice which surprises everyone, even herself. Beatrice renames herself Tris during the highly competitive initiation that follows, and struggles to live out the choice they made alongside her fellow initiates. They must together undergo extreme physical endurance tests and intense psychological simulations, some with devastating consequences. As initiation transforms them all, Tris needs to determine who her friends really are—and exactly where a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes exasperating boy fits into the life she's chosen for. But Tris also has a secret, one that she has kept hidden from all because she has been warned that can mean death. And as she finds unrest and growing conflicts that threaten to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her to save those she loves.

Quotes from Divergent

It must be because you're so approachable,' I say flatly. 'You know. Like a bed of nails.'
He stares at me, and I don't look away. He isn't a dog but the same rules apply. Looking away is submissive. Looking him in the eye is a challenge. It's my choice.
Heat rushes into my cheeks. What will happen when this tension breaks?
But he just says, 'Careful, Tris.

That is death - shifting from "is" to "was.

I am fed up. I am fed up with tears and weakness. But there isn't much I can do to stop them.

Do they have to be so public? I say.
"She just kissed him." Al frowns at me. When he frowns, his thick eyebrows touch his eyelashes. "It’s not like they’re stripping naked."
"A kiss is not something you do in public."
Al, Will, and Christina all give me the same knowing smile.
What? I say.
Your Abnegation is showing, says Christina. The rest of us are all right with a little affection in public.
Oh. I shrug. Well...I guess I’ll have to get over it, then.
Or you can stay frigid, says Will, his green eyes glinting with mischief. You know. If you want.

He is not sweet or gentle or particularly kind. But he is smart and brave, and even though he saved me, he treated me like I was strong. That is all I need to know.

I have realized that part of being Dauntless is being willing to make things more difficult for yourself in order to be self-sufficient. There's nothing especially brave about wandering dark streets with no flashlight, but we are not supposed to need help, even from light. We are supposed to be capable of anything. I like that. Because there might come a day when there is no flashlight, there is no gun, there is no guiding hand. And I want to be ready.

Reviews of Divergent

Fans snared by the ratcheting suspense will be unable to resist speculating on their own factional allegiance; a few may go on to ponder the questions of loyalty and identity beneath the façade of thrilling adventure.

I thought this book had a very original plot and I was intrigued at the way the society was structured. The characters were completely believable in their battles to face their fears and as soon as I had finished the book I couldn’t wait to pick up book 2...

Divergent was far more enjoyable than I was expecting and I found it a satisfying read, although the end of the book held events that left me slightly confused.

Maintaining a gripping pace throughout, with suspense and plot twists around every corner, while also being extremely thought provoking and utterly unique, Divergent is almost definitely a book to read.
