Chasing Fire

Nora Roberts delves into the world of elite firefighters thriving on danger and adrenaline in this #1 New York Times bestseller—men and women who wouldn't know how to live life if it weren't on the brink. Little else in life is as dangerous as jumping from fire. But there's little else as exciting a... s well -- at least to Rowan Tripp. It is in Rowan's blood to be a Missoula smoke jumper: her father is a legend in the field. Returning to the wilds of Montana for the season at this point feels like coming home—even with reminders from the partner she lost last season lingering still in the air. Gulliver Curry is one of the best of this year's rookie crop, a walking contradiction, a hotshot firefighter with a big vocabulary and a winter job at a children's arcade. And although Rowan, as a rule, doesn't hook up with other smoke jumpers, Gull is convinced that he can change her mind.. But when a dark presence blows against Rowan, looking to blame someone for last year's tragedy, everything is thrown off balance. Rowan knows she can't make things more complicated with Gull—any distractions in the air or on the ground could be lethal. But if she doesn't find someone she can lean on when the heat becomes intense, her life could go down in flames.

Popular, prolific Roberts (The Search, 2010, etc.) delivers hair-raising smoke-jumping sequences along with the obligatory thrills, sex and a mystery even the greenest armchair sleuths will be able to solve.

Once again, Roberts makes the reader proud of heroic, strong women who know how to fight a fire, solve a mystery, and get a man all in one short summer.

There were two things, though, that bothered me: The writing, and the villain.

Dealing with heartache, guilt and issues that many of us deal with on a smaller level in our own lives, Roberts takes us on a journey of love and healing at the same time we navigate a tense and thrilling mystery.
