Tracy Kidder is an American author and a veteran of the Vietnam War. Kidder may be best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning The Soul of a New Machine, a Data Generals Eclipse/MV minicomputer development account, particularly within the computing community. The book characterizes his distinctive research style. He started following the project at its inception and spent considerable time observing the engineers at work and outside it, in addition to interviews. Using this perspective, he was able to produce a more textured portrait of the development process than a purely retrospective study might have. Kidder followed up with House in which he chronicled the design and construction of the award-winning Souw. House reads like a novel, but it is based on many hours of research with architects, builders, clients, in-laws and other stakeholders. In 2003, Kidder also published Mountains Beyond Mountains: Dr. Paul Farmer's Quest, A Man Who Would Cure The World after a chance meeting with Paul Farmer.
