Librarian Note: The Readershook database contains more than one author with this name. Robert Jordan was James Oliver Rigney, Jr.'s pen name, under which he was best known as the author of the bestselling The Wheel of Time fantasy series. He also wrote in Charleston, South Carolina, under the names of Reagan ONeal and Jackson OReilly.Jordan was born. He served two tours with the U.S. Army as a helicopter gunner in Vietnam (from 1968 to 1970). The... Distinguished Flying Cross with bronze oak leaf cluster, the Bronze Star with "V" and bronze oak leaf cluster, and two Vietnamese Gallantry Crosses with palm were awarded. He attended The Citadel after returning from Vietnam where he received a degree in physics. He was employed as a nuclear engineer by the U.S. Navy after graduating. He started writing in 1977. He was a history buff and enjoyed collecting hunting, fishing, sailing, poker, chess, pool, and pipe. He described himself as an Episcopalian "High Church" and received more than once a week of communion. He lived in a house built in 1797 with his wife Harriet McDougal, who works as a book editor (currently with Tor Books; she was also Jordan's editor). Jordan admitted that he was a Freemason, answering questions about the similarity of some of the concepts in his Wheel of Time books with Freemasonry concepts. He preferred not to advertise, however, "like his father and grandfather," possibly due to the negative propaganda against Freemasonry. In his own words, "no man in this country should feel in danger because of his beliefs." On March 23, 2006, Jordan revealed in a statement that he had been diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis and that his median life expectancy was four years with treatment, although he said he intended to beat the statistics. He later posted on his Dragonmount blog to encourage his fans not to worry about him and that he intended to have a long and creative life. He started chemotherapy treatment in early April 2006 at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Jordan was enrolled in a study using the drug Revlimid just approved for multiple myeloma but not yet tested on primary amyloidosis.READ MORE

Popular quotes by Robert Jordan

Life is a dream from which we all must wake before we can dream again.

Anyone who claimed that old age had brought them patience was either lying or senile.

May you shelter in the palm of the Creator's hand, and may the last embrace of the mother welcome you home.

Give me your trust, said the Aes Sedai.
On my shoulders I support the sky.
Trust me to know and to do what is best,
And I will take care of the rest.
But trust is the color of a dark seed growing.
Trust is the color of a heart's blood flowing.
Trust is the color of a soul's last breath.
Trust is the color of death.

Give me your trust said the queen on her throne,
for I must bear the burden alone.
Trust me to lead and to judge and to rule, and no man will think you a fool.
But trust is the sound of the grave-dog's bark.
Trust is the sound of betrayal in the dark.
Trust is the sound of a soul's last breath.
Trust is the sound of death.

Past is past, and the future is ahead.

My name is Nynaeve ti al’Meara Mandragoran. The message I want sent is this. My husband rides from World’s End toward Tarwin’s Gap, toward Tarmon Gai’don. Will he ride alone?
