Born and raised in Washington, D.C. suburbs, Dhonielle spent much of her childhood hiding with a stack of books under the dining table of her grandmother. Clayton rediscovered her passion for children's and young adult literature as an English professor at a ballet academy. She pursued her Masters in Children's Literature from Hollins University to ground herself in the canon, before receiving her MFA in New School Writing for Children. She is a former middle school librarian, where she was plaguing kids with reading and curating a diverse collection. An avid traveler, Dhonielle has lived in several foreign countries, but now she's settled in Harlem where you'll find her writing late into the night, lurking in libraries, and hunting for New York's best slice of pizza! She is the co-founder of Cake Literary and the COO of We Need Diverse Books. The co-author of Tiny Pretty Things and Shiny Broken Pieces dance dramas as well as the upcoming Rumor Game, Dhonielle is the New York Times bestselling YA fantasy series The Belles.
